Karen R. Hammond

Meet Dr. Karen R. Hammond

Dr. Karen Hammond is the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner at America Institute of Reproductive Medicine/IVF Alabama.  She has worked in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility since 1985.  A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she received her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees from the University of Alabama School of Nursing in Birmingham.  She is nationally certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, as well as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.  She practiced at UAB from 1985 to 2003, when she opted to collaborate with a physician to found Alabama Fertility Specialists and continued this collaborative practice until his retirement in 2018.  She established the oocyte donation program at UAB that resulted in the state’s first egg donor IVF birth.  She established the embryo donation program at AFS in 2009.  

A recognized leader in reproductive endocrinology and infertility nursing, Dr. Hammond has been an invited speaker and research presenter at countless local, state, national, and international nursing and medical meetings.  She has received numerous awards for clinical practice, research, and professional service.  She has been the Course Director for the annual Donor Egg Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina since its inception in 1998.  She is past Chair of the Board of Directors of The American Fertility Association (now Path2Parenthood), the world’s largest patient advocacy organization dedicated to reproductive health and wellness.  Dr. Hammond has published extensively in peer-reviewed nursing and medical journals, authored chapters in more than a dozen medical textbooks, and edited a book on the Assisted Reproductive Technology Team.   

Her research interests include infertility prevention, access to infertility treatment, ovulation induction, hypothyroidism, transvaginal sonography, and third-party reproduction.

Dr. Hammond truly enjoys direct patient care.  She prides herself in providing the high-quality patient care that is warranted in the intimate journey to parenthood.  Her kindness and approachable nature, along with her vast clinical knowledge make her an exemplary clinician.

Dr. Hammond is happily married to Dr. Nicholas Cataldo, a reproductive endocrinologist/epidemiologist.  She has three adult stepsons and two adorable rescue cats.  She is a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church.  She enjoys cooking, gardening, travel, and family activities.
